Moderate-Severe Special Education Program

The Special Education - Moderate/Severe program was established for the purpose of providing assessment, instruction, and program planning for special education students with a primary disability of autism, multiple disabilities, serious emotional disturbances, and moderate to severe intellectual disabilities. The core components of the Moderate/Severe Special Education program are Functional Academics (English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies), Transition Skills, and Community Based Instruction.

Special Education

Functional Academics consists of life skills needed by the student to be successful in the environment where they are currently functioning or will be functioning after leaving high school. It is a collaborative effort, bringing together a wide range of services including Speech/Language, Occupational Therapy, Adaptive Physical Education, Psychology, Physical Therapy and Health Care.

Our program also offers transition services in the form of career planning, job readiness skills, and job experiences.

Students participate in Community Based Instruction on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, where they learn independent living skills such as community navigation, shopping/purchasing, and recreation and leisure. Each student is assigned a case manager who monitors and evaluates the student progress and behavior which will aid them in transitioning to adult community based programs after high school.

The IEP team serves as an important resource for students, parents, District personnel and community organizations.
