Criminal Justice

We explore the Criminal Justice System through a restorative lens empowering students to do their part to reduce the "school to prison pipeline."
In Introduction to Criminal Justice students learn about the basic steps and stages of promoting public safety and responding to crime within Law Enforcement, the Courts, and Corrections and Restorative Justice in our local system. Lincoln High School is one of two schools in the county with its own moot courtroom, where we do mock hearings and mock trials. Students learn about diversion and can participate as a teen juror in the juvenile diversion program, Teen Court. We also learn about the history of policing and corrections, current status and explore opportunities for improvements. Students receive a certificate for their participation with police officers in the Art of Communication training, from the National Conflict Resolution Center, where they learn about implicit bias, identity and conflict resolution. In addition to a related guest speakers, students will have the opportunity to participate in a field trip to the San Diego County Superior Courthouse.

In the intermediate class, Criminal Justice Careers 1,2, students will learn about the Federal Justice System and related agencies. Students will continue to build their conflict resolution and restorative practice skills as they are trained as peer mediators. We will talk about the impact of bullying and explore a situation where unresolved bullying turned into a bomb threat. Students will earn certifications for Incident Command Systems-100 and Heartsaver CPR through the American Heart Association. Students will work with administration to plan and evaluate the execution of a drill where students shelter in place and evacuate. Students will learn how the FBI and ATF work with local law enforcement to respond and catch the person who made the threats and we will also use the moot courtroom to hold a grand jury hearing and a trial. Students will also prepare a resume, cover letter and participate in a mock interview.

Criminal Justice Careers 3,4 is the advanced class where students will learn project management skills, practice restorative justice and conflict resolution skills, do career research projects, crime analysis, do a series of job shadows and finally an internship project specific to their career interests.

Open Activities: All Lincoln students are welcome to come and be trained and participate in the Mock Trial Team, Restorative Justice League and Teen Court.
